Webinar 1: Bunker Quality Claims
The first webinar covered “Bunker Quality Claims” and was moderated by Capt. Anuj Velankar from the UK P&I Club. He highlighted the need to stay vigilant about maritime hazards despite Covid-19 challenges. The discussion emphasized the complexity of bunker quality claims, involving multiple stakeholders who must understand their rights and responsibilities.
Ansuman Ghosh, Risk Assessor at the UK P&I Club, explained that many machinery failures are due to poor-quality bunkers or fuel management issues, stressing the importance of reliable suppliers and thorough testing.
Kendall Tan, Partner at Rajah & Tann, advised on the necessity for clear charterparty terms regarding bunker standards and testing mechanisms to avoid disputes. He also emphasized proper documentation and understanding contractual chains and recourses.

Webinar 2: Technical Aspects of a Fuel Quality Claim
The second webinar, held on May 6th, focused on “Technical Aspects of a Fuel Quality Claim” and featured a Q&A session. Moderated by Anuj Velankar and Ansuman Ghosh, they were joined by James Duncombe from CWA. The session addressed numerous practical and operational queries from the audience, highlighting ongoing doubts about fuel handling and testing practices.
Key discussions included the persistence of older fuel standards, the pros and cons of GCMS testing, and recent issues with piston ring and liner failures. James Duncombe presented on these topics, while Ansuman Ghosh expressed concerns about Main Engine liner damages and the need for updated ISO fuel standards.
The webinar was well-attended, with around 640 people attending.
