The 2024 edition of ISO 8217 has many important updates compared to the 2017 version. These changes are due to new environmental laws and the need to reduce emissions in shipping.

The updates include new fuel blends that can now include up to 100% fatty acid methyl ester. The old table for residual marine (RM) fuels has been split into two: one for fuels with less than 0.50% sulphur and one for fuels with more than 0.50% sulphur. Because these new fuels are so different, they need special quality checks. The goal of these updates is to improve fuel quality and make operations more efficient.

In this new episode of our "Ask an Expert" series, Ansuman Ghosh, Director of Risk Assessment talks about the importance of these changes with Michael Banning from Brookes Bell.
