Key Discussions

  • Practical Issues: Addressing the challenges ship staff face when preparing cargo holds to high standards like “Grain Clean.” The discussion included whether there are common global standards and what factors can cause a vessel to fail hold readiness.
  • Legal Issues: Exploring the legal aspects of hold preparation, including general clauses in Charter parties related to hold cleanliness and the liabilities of ship owners and charterers when cargo holds fail.
  • Dispute Resolution: How disputes related to hold preparation are typically resolved between different parties.

An FAQ session was also held on Hold Preparation and Cleaning and an article which explores the legal issues of hold cleaning. These can be found at the bottom of this page under 'Webinar Links'.

Ask An Expert on Grain contamination claims

As a follow up, an Ask-an-Expert series was recorded with Chris Ellyatt of CWA international. While the webinar addressed the practical and legal aspects of hold cleaning, the Ask-an-Expert session focused on what happens when grain cargo is found to be contaminated. It covered how to determine if contamination resulted from hold cleaning or inherent issues and the options available to owners when faced with contaminated grain cargo.
