The UK P&I Club held a webinar on the significant topic of machinery operations and their impact on P&I claims.

This session explored the challenges and consequences of mechanical failures, which have led to major shipping casualties, and emphasized the importance of learning from these incidents. The webinar provided expert insights into the three pillars of machinery management: monitoring, maintenance, and continuous learning.

Key discussions:

Each year, a substantial number of large P&I claims are linked to machinery operations. Factors contributing to these incidents include improper training, hardware quality, poor housekeeping, and ineffective communication.This webinar examines, through use of case studies and interactive participation, the following:

  • The role of technical managers
  • Development of new technology and associated crew training
  • The challenges faced by engineers onboard ship
  • How mechanical failures have led to large shipping casualties
  • The importance of learning lessons

The panel featured Ansuman Ghosh, Director of Risk Assessment at the UK P&I Club, who served as the moderator. He was joined by John Gibson, Director of Asia at Brookes Bell, and Satya Prakash, Deputy General Manager (Technical) at Laurel Ship Management.
