Sanctions restrictions are currently imposed by the US, the EU, the UK, Canada, Switzerland and Ukraine to mount international pressure against the current oppressive regime in Belarus. These have become subject to phased tightening since the re-election of Belarus’ president, Alexander Lukashenko in 2020.
Although largely co-ordinated, there are varying sets of sanctions in place from the UK, EU, US and Canada on many individuals and entities.
To avoid severe penalties and possible loss of insurance cover, Members should carefully ensure that all parties associated with a voyage are checked against the lists of specially designated nationals (SDNs) and prohibited activities before considering undertaking any trade with Belarus, or Belorussian entities or individuals.
