Foot and Mouth Disease has become a topical subject recently mainly because of the recent outbreak of the disease in the UK and its spread to some other countries in the EU. The problem however is not just confined to the UK and the EU but has for many years been a world-wide problem.
In December 2000 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority implemented an enhanced inspection regime both within the current Port State Control frame work and on unscheduled visits. The program - to last two years - is to focus on six specific areas highlighted by the AMSA as areas of concern. The focus of this enhanced inspection will change every four months.
Due to a recent outbreak of food and mouth disease in the United Kingdom, and reports of outbreaks of the disease in France, many countries in the world are now enforcing restrictions against the import of meat and food products from Europe. Outbreaks of the disease are also reported in Argentina, Colombia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
We have been advised by the Club's correspondents, in Buenos Aires, of a number of recent theft cases on cargoes out of Santos, Brazil in containers bound for Buenos Aires.

The following measures are to be applied for the prevention of entry and spread of Ebola Haemorrhagic Fever in India as directed by the Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Members will be aware of the recent incident in the Netherlands where a major explosion killed 23 people and destroyed some 400 houses.
