Members trading ships to and from the US will be interested in a new Coast Guard requirement for nontank ships to submit a response plan. Operators of tankers trading to US waters will already be familiar with the requirement to lodge an oil spill response plan with the US Coast Guard.
Heavy rain and flood water in South China have affected water transport on the Pearl River. Members are advised to check with their local agents if calling to ports in the upper reaches of the Pearl River, and also to pay special attention to the origin and condition of any containers or cargo loaded in the region.

The UK Maritime & Coast Guard Agency (MCA) has issued a Marine Guidance Note on the control and management of ships' ballast water and sediments. MGN 363 draws attention to the developments at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) with respect to non-indigenous species being transported in ships' ballast water. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has updated its information regarding the Asian Gypsy Moth (AGM) program.
The Association has been advised of a recent incident in Batumi where a Member has been fined GEL 65,218 (US$ 44,978) for infringement of Georgian Regulations in relation to the discharge of treated sewage.
