Armed guards on Italian flagged ships

Italy has finally ruled in favour of the lawfulness of employment of armed guards on board of Italian flagged vessels by Decree Law n.107. dated 12 July 2011.
On the 23rd June, the US Government issued a Joint Statement on Iran Sanctions which added the main provider of Iranian port services, Tidewater Middle East Co, to its Specially Designated Nationals ("SDN") list. The US government has included Tidewater Middle East on the basis that its ports have been used "to export arms or related materiel in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs)". This item was amended on 4th July to explain more specifically the Club's cover in relation to the port operator, rather than the geographic port .
Day of the Seafarer - a 'new media' success

The UK Club was proud to have been one of the participants in the IMO's new media initiative in celebration of the Day of the Seafarer on the 25th June. Initial feedback from the IMO's New Media Officer, Karine Langlois showed an enthusiastic take up on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
Safety at Sea awards 2011 (23rd June 2011)

For the second year running our Club sponsored the Training award for the Safety at Sea awards. Our loss prevention Karl Lumbers presented the award at a ceremony on board the museum warship, HMS Belfast. The winner of the award was the organisation Seafish Industry for their damage control training for fishermen.
Day of the Seafarer 2011

In 2010, IMO Member States agreed that the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole, should be marked annually with a 'Day of the Seafarer'.
Following the continuing success of its main Insight Course in London, a second course is to be held this year at the Athens Hilton Hotel on the 6th to the 7th December. "An insight into transport law and insurance" is a practical, extensive two-day course for the non-insurance specialist. Places on the course are limited and priority in applications will be given to Club Members.
Tanker ports update - Japan

This ports update bulletin is revised as and when new information on wet bulk terminals is received. Whilst the web page displays just those terminals where damage and or interruption has been reported, a spreadsheet listing the status of all terminals for which we have reports is attached to the bulletin. A Japan ports map listing contact numbers for all the major ports is also listed.
The Club has published a checklist and guide to avoiding fires when carrying Indonesian coal cargoes in bulk. It is an 'aide memoire' for the guidance of shippers, shipowners, charterers, surveyors, ships' crews and other parties involved in the loading and carriage of cargoes of coal. Self-heating incidents involving coal cargoes loaded at Indonesian ports have become increasingly frequent in recent years. The problem appears to stem from the nature of these coals, possibly exacerbated by local handling loading.
Detailed rules for implementation of the recent legislation on marine pollution prevention and response have now been issued by China's maritime safety administration (MSA). The rules that require ship operators to engage an approved clean-up contractor will be enforced from 1 January 2012.
London broker evening - May 24th

The UK P&I and Defence Clubs hosted a broker evening at Balls Brothers wine bar in the City of London on 24th May. A long and convivial evening was enjoyed by all in the traditional shipping heartland of St Mary Axe, adjacent to the Baltic Exchange.
Our P&I Club Chairman, Mr Dinos Caroussis, of Chios Navigation, welcomed the Greek marine broking community to a social evening, together with Thomas Miller (Hellas) Ltd. and colleagues from Thomas Miller P&I and Defence in London, at the Piraeus Sailing Club, in Mikrolimano, on the evening of Tuesday 17 May 2011.

25th Annual UK Club Mountain Climb in Korea

The 25th Annual UK Club Mountain Climb (UK MC) took place on Saturday 14th May at Keum Byeong Mountain, about 90 kilometres to the north-east of Seoul. This year's UKMC was a rather special occasion; the 25th Anniversary of the first official UK Club Mountain Climb held in 1986 and an annual event ever since. It also came at the end of a week in which the UK Club activities had been very much focused on Korea. Earlier in the week the Directors of the UK Club had meet in Seoul for a Board meeting followed by Reception for local members and shipping community.
Member Survey 2011 - May update

The Club's Member Survey is now well under way as consulting research company , RSM, have commenced interviewing their sample of Members by telephone. A target of 150 individuals employed by our Members has been established as a minimum sample to find out what the wider membership thinks about the Club and the service that it offers.
Scholarship & Insight (Editorial:19th May)

Deadlines are approaching for applicants for two excellent educational opportunities in London in 2011. "An Insight into Transport Law and Insurance" is a practical, extensive three day course for the non-insurance specialist. The Robin Travis scholarship provides a three month paid internship for a motivated individual who is working in Germany and is currently employed in the shipping, transport or marine insurance sector.
Our Club has built on the success of last year increasing capital and free reserves by $68 million to an all-time high of $478 million.
The Thomas Miller offices in the UK will be closed for public holidays on both Friday 29th April and Monday 2nd May. These holidays arise from the Prince of Wales' wedding and the traditional May 1st holiday respectively.
