The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) have issued a circular in advance of the peak season for Asian Gypsy Moth which begins on March 1, 2014.

Following consultation with IACS, IMPA (International Maritime Pilots' Association) the UKMPA has issued a notice stating that pilot ladders using step hooks to secure pilot ladders is not in compliance with SOLAS.
During November and December 2013, CIQ, the Chinese authority in charge of cargo inspection and quarantine, has rejected over 600,000 tons of corn exported from the US on account of the cargo containing MIR 162.
The Club has been made aware of a Member being fined for the possession of an unauthorized satellite phone on board one of their vessels.
A Club contact has informed us that vessels calling at the VTE terminal in Genoa will be required to supply additional documentation to the Port Authorities and sulphur content tests will take place.

903 - 07/13 - Providing securities under S.27 of the updated Protection of the Sea Act - Australia

Australian policy makers have a very low (zero) tolerance for pollution of the sea. This is reflected in the Commonwealth's Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983 ("the Act") which (at Sections 9 and 10) sets out strict liability offences for oil and oily water pollution attracting maximum fines of AUD$3.4 million for individuals and AUD$17 million for corporations.
Further to previous updates and Bulletins, this Bulletin is a reminder that the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) will enter force on 20th August 2013 for the 30 countries which ratified the convention on or before 20th August 2012.
Following Bulletin 889, the IMO has released a Circular which provides dispensation for discharging wash water containing HME.
