The G8 Summit is taking place in Genoa. As a result no ships will be allowed to enter, move or leave the port of Genoa between 18 and 23 July 2001. The Association's correspondents, Studio Legale Mordiglia are intending to keep the office open as normal but the likelihood of street demonstrations means that after hours numbers may have to be used.

Tough new laws have been introduced with effect from Friday 4 May 2001 to give greater protection to the Great Barrier Reef from negligent mariners and oil spills.
From 1st July 2001 the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) will introduce new ballast water management arrangements for all international vessels visiting Australia. These arrangements are being put in place to assist in reducing the risk of exotic pests or diseases entering Australia's marine environment.

The growing concern of the Spanish authorities over shipping safety has resulted in the inspection of a minimum of 25% of vessels entering Spanish jurisdiction.
Recently a Member's vessel left the port of el-Dekheilo, Egypt, bound for Bilbao. Within 24 hours of the ship's departure, a number of Ukrainian crewmembers were taken seriously ill.
H2S content is too high to discharge.
Foot and Mouth Disease has become a topical subject recently mainly because of the recent outbreak of the disease in the UK and its spread to some other countries in the EU. The problem however is not just confined to the UK and the EU but has for many years been a world-wide problem.
In December 2000 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority implemented an enhanced inspection regime both within the current Port State Control frame work and on unscheduled visits. The program - to last two years - is to focus on six specific areas highlighted by the AMSA as areas of concern. The focus of this enhanced inspection will change every four months.

Due to a recent outbreak of food and mouth disease in the United Kingdom, and reports of outbreaks of the disease in France, many countries in the world are now enforcing restrictions against the import of meat and food products from Europe. Outbreaks of the disease are also reported in Argentina, Colombia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
We have been advised by the Club's correspondents, in Buenos Aires, of a number of recent theft cases on cargoes out of Santos, Brazil in containers bound for Buenos Aires.
