The financial statements of the UK Club are now available on our website. These provide the full report of another operating surplus for the year just ended and a further significant increase in the Club's free reserves and capital which now stand at $478 million, the highest they have ever been. The Directors Report & Financial Statements can be downloaded as a pdf. Key topics such as underwriting, claims and reinsurance are also presented as individual web pages.
The North American Emission Control Area (ECA) was jointly proposed by the United States, Canada, and France in July 2009 to regulate emissions from ships.
Armed guards - 21 July 2011

Despite recent media suggestions, there is no formal white list of 'approved' marine security companies maintained by UK Club. However, there are numerous contracts between our Members and such companies that have been approved, in many cases after amendments suggested by us. Approval of a contract does not mean that we have vetted or approved the company in a wider sense - we haven't.

The last eighteen months has seen numerous new sanctions regimes introduced by the EU, UN and the U.S. Amongst the shipping community, there has naturally been a heavy focus on Iranian and Libyan sanctions. It is important to understand, however, that there are now a whole host of countries facing sanctions from the EU, UN and U.S.
Stowaways: a perennial problem

The recent tragedy in the Red Sea where nearly 200 migrants from the Sudan drowned whilst sailing for Saudi Arabia is a reminder of the scale of international human migration. Many such migrants attempt to smuggle themselves on board international merchant ships in search of a better and safer life abroad.
A multi-million dollar ship tracking system designed to protect the northern part of Queensland's Great Barrier Reef has been expanded to cover the full marine park.
On the 23rd June, the US Government issued a Joint Statement on Iran Sanctions which added the main provider of Iranian port services, Tidewater Middle East Co, to its Specially Designated Nationals ("SDN") list. The US government has included Tidewater Middle East on the basis that its ports have been used "to export arms or related materiel in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs)". This item was amended on 4th July to explain more specifically the Club's cover in relation to the port operator, rather than the geographic port .
South African Review - June 2011

Welcome to the first edition of our joint UK P&I and UK Defence Club review for our South African Members. In this review, one of our correspondents gives an overview of stowaway problems, with specific reference to local South African issues. The question of armed guards on-board ship as a counter to piracy is also reviewed on page 7. Whilst not prohibited by P&I cover per se, some difficult issues arise from the implementation of armed guards in respect of firearms regulations.
UK Club Anti-bribery policy

As a mutual insurer for ship operators we set great store by fairness between Members and probity when dealing on their behalf. In support of our commitment to maintaining the highest possible standards of business practice we hold a 'zero-tolerance' stance towards bribery. Bribery is illegal and as such has no place in our organisation. This policy also applies to all third parties who act on behalf of the UK Club.
Day of the Seafarer - a 'new media' success

The UK Club was proud to have been one of the participants in the IMO's new media initiative in celebration of the Day of the Seafarer on the 25th June. Initial feedback from the IMO's New Media Officer, Karine Langlois showed an enthusiastic take up on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

Safety at Sea awards 2011 (23rd June 2011)

For the second year running our Club sponsored the Training award for the Safety at Sea awards. Our loss prevention Karl Lumbers presented the award at a ceremony on board the museum warship, HMS Belfast. The winner of the award was the organisation Seafish Industry for their damage control training for fishermen.
Day of the Seafarer 2011

In 2010, IMO Member States agreed that the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole, should be marked annually with a 'Day of the Seafarer'.
Following the continuing success of its main Insight Course in London, a second course is to be held this year at the Athens Hilton Hotel on the 6th to the 7th December. "An insight into transport law and insurance" is a practical, extensive two-day course for the non-insurance specialist. Places on the course are limited and priority in applications will be given to Club Members.
Tanker ports update - Japan

This ports update bulletin is revised as and when new information on wet bulk terminals is received. Whilst the web page displays just those terminals where damage and or interruption has been reported, a spreadsheet listing the status of all terminals for which we have reports is attached to the bulletin. A Japan ports map listing contact numbers for all the major ports is also listed.
