Last week saw the UK Parliament hit by a 'sustained' cyber-attack, which centred on identifying weak passwords and exploiting them. This in addition to the recent ransomware attack on several NHS trusts, causing problems in many hospitals in England, highlights how easily seemingly secure systems can be hacked.

Welcome to this summer edition of Bodily Injury News that reports on some of the latest legal and practical developments observed by our Bodily Injury Team in the US.
Mental health affects crew of all ages, nationalities and ranks. A recent analysis of crew mental health revealed anxiety, social isolation, pressure of work and disturbed sleep can affect crew, all of which can negatively influence their mental health.
The new, harmonised EU-wide regulatory regime for Insurance Companies, known as Solvency II, came into force with effect from 1 January 2016. The regime requires new reporting and public disclosure arrangements to be put in place by insurers and some of that is required to be published on the Company's public website.
As from May 2018, it will be compulsory for vessels calling at ports in New Zealand to comply with the Craft Risk Management Standard (CRMS) for biofouling

Technology - friend or foe?

As the years have progressed, so has technology. In the not so distant past, computers were a thing of luxury however they now deemed more of a necessity. We are becoming increasingly reliant on this assistance but should it be considered a friend or foe?
The USCG Marine Safety Centre (MSC) has issued a Type Approval Certificate to Sunrui Marine Environment Engineering Co. Ltd for its Filtration/ Electrolysis ballast water treatment system. This brings the total number of systems approved by the USCG to date to four. Two further systems are currently under review.
U.S. Cuban Policy Update

On June 16, 2017 President Trump issued a Presidential Memorandum on Strengthening the Policy of the United States Toward Cuba. In a speech on that date to Cuban-Americans in Miami, President Trump stated that he was immediately cancelling the Obama Administration's "one-sided deal with Cuba". The question is whether this new policy will impact international shipping.
