Air pollution from maritime transport is a global environmental concern. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been working to reduce the harmful impacts of shipping on the environment, but as highlighted in the attached Legal Update, challenges for compliance and enforcement in regards to Sulphur emissions still remain.

The US Coast Guard issued a bulletin advising that the installation and operation of ballast water management systems (BWMSs) on ships will require work specific to each vessel and its overall situation. Owners and operators should not expect that 'plug and play' will be appropriate.

The introduction of invasive aquatic species (IAS) associated with global shipping has been identified as a significant threat to the world's oceans and coastal ecosystems. Research suggests that 70-80% of IAS introductions occur through biofouling, and new areas are constantly being invaded.
On Nov 3, 2017, Hainan MSA issued a Notice on Implementation Scheme of Ship Pollution Control to enhance the supervision and management of prevention and control of ship pollution in the area of Hainan province, including the coastal ports of Yangpu, Haikou, Sanya and Basuo as well as the Qiongzhou strait. The UK P&I Club have received the following update from its local correspondents on the issue.
