Ceniude Lda, a UK Club Crew Health approved clinic in Lisbon, Portugal, recently participated in the 1st Portuguese Job Fair and Congress Working on a Ship.
Capital Link Forum- Athens November 2017

UK P&I Club Senior Loss Prevention Executive David Nichol was speaking at a high profile shipping industry forum in Athens this week. The event was organised by Capital Link at the Divani Caravel hotel and was entitled "Best industry practices - A competitive advantage".
The Club wishes to bring to Members' attention that during the recent XIX Party Congress in Beijing, the local authorities in China implemented enhanced security measures at all ports. We were aware of a number of cases where crew members were required by local authorities to surrender their mobile phones or other electronic devices for inspection when ships call at ports in China. Those inspections appeared to have been conducted at random, of if a ship was specifically identified as posing a security threat.

Plague outbreak - Madagascar

Madagascar has been experiencing a large outbreak of plague affecting major cities and other non-endemic areas since August 2017.
OCIMF published the third edition of its Tanker Management and Self-Assessment guide (TMSA3) in April 2017. As of 1 January 2018, this will replace the TMSA2 and tanker owners will be required to follow the new self-assessment procedure.
Lessons Learnt: Flooding of cargo hold

During cargo operations, the duty deck officer noticed the presence of a large quantity of water within one of the holds. He immediately informed the master and arrangements were made to transfer the water into a holding tank using the hold bilge pumping system.
Refinery catalytic fines in marine fuel oil are not a new problem but in recent years there appears to have been an increase in the frequency of engine damage caused by these highly abrasive particles. In conjunction with Brookes Bell, the UK Club have produced the following technical advice for Members.
A number of notifications have been received by Members operating LNG tankers, from The Superintendent of Customs in Surat, concerning alleged shortages for recent shipments of LNG to Hazira LNG.

Lessons Learnt: Injury to Pilot

In preparation for arrival in port to load cargo, the crew rigged the pilot ladder combination on the port side in accordance with the pilot's instructions. The tanker's master manoeuvred the vessel to create a lee for the pilot launch and the pilot transferred from the launch to the rope ladder without incident. Unbeknown to the launch crew, a tripping line attached near to the bottom rung of the ladder fouled a cleat on the near side of the launch and as the craft manoeuvred away, the ladder was stretched and pulled from the ship's side.
Lessons Learnt: Fall in cargo hold

The crew were instructed to clean the vessel's cargo holds in preparation for the next cargo. The vessel was underway with sea conditions recorded as slight with no ship movement. In order to gain better access to the upper areas of the hold, the crew arranged to position the high pressure washing equipment on top of portable staging erected on the tank top.
